Hi Scott, I really enjoy your show and appreciate how you use “logical & modern” techniques to speed up production of a piece (ie: pocket holes, biscuits, use of plywood at times, etc.) As an amateur woodworker I appreciate the "keep it simple BUT make it good looking and solid approach" your show seems to take.
A quick question, in one of your shows you talked about using a planer to get S2S lumber (tallboy). My understanding was that you needed both a jointer and a planer to do this. I was of the understanding that you plane one large surface flat then square up an edge. This is followed by a run through the planer to size the board and parallel the other face and then to the table saw to parallel the final edge (S4S). Paralleling the edges (with a table saw and jointer) was discussed on your show but I had the impression that you were using the planer twice to parallel the two faces (giving S2S) ? Do you not need to flatten one face on the jointer such that any bows are not then replicated on the planer ? Was this assumed in the show? Just curious? ~ Wade Gemmell, Canada
Hi Wade, Here is the total story on S4S (surfaced on four side) lumber. Buy flat boards then use the planer to S2S the two wide flat surfaces. Joint an edge straight (S3S). Then rip the other edge parallel to the jointed edge.
Some people do buy warped, twisted, cupped, bent and crooked boards that need to be face jointed first. I simply stay away from boards that need to be face jointed by not buying them. So I guess you could say that I skip one step. I would rather buy good wood at a higher price than get a bargain that has tons of built in compression and tension wood in it. ~

Hi Scott: I'm writing to you in regards to the 10/13/07 episode where you had a folding table on there that was really neat. It had a narrow section in the middle, and two wide sections on the sides that fold down, when you lift them up the legs swivel over hinge pins, to hold the leafs up. I looked on your web site, and can't find where you can get one of those, can you help.~ Brian
Hi Brian, The project will be put into plan form on the WBGU-PBS website for free in December. I am trying to make free plans for all my shows now. It takes a huge amount of time. Sorry about this two-month delay. ~ Scott
