The hour-long program also examines the history of Baseball in Japan. It was brought to the country in 1873 by Horace Wilson, an American-born English teacher living in Tokyo. The first professional leagues were started in 1936, and there are now 12 major league teams in Japan, in the Central and Pacific divisions. Americans have played for Japanese teams since the days of Babe Ruth and they remain an integral part of Japanese teams. Footage of the Ruth days and interviews with today's American players are woven throughout Baseball In Japan.
A lot of people say that instead of having a rising sun in the Japanese flag, they should have a baseball, says Tony Howard, producer of Baseball In Japan. The program features interviews with American baseball players who are playing with Japanese teams, including Tom O'Malley, first baseman for the Hanshin Tigers, and Marty Brown, an outfielder for the Hiroshima Carps. Interviews with Katsuhiro Nakamura, manager of the Hanshim Tigers and Kenjiroh Nomura, a shortstop for the Hiroshima Carps are also included.
