When popular how-to-host, author, and self-described control freak, Marcia Adams learned she had life-threatening heart disease, she was devastated. After the initial shock, she thought she'd passively allow nature to take its course. Then the real Marcia reappeared.
"It was taking too long to die, and it was also boring and a waste of time," Marcia said. She decided, instead, to fight for her life. And, as usual, to help others along the way.
Airing on PBS stations in February during American Heart Month, (check local listings), Marcia Adams: Heart To Heart is a gripping documentary that tells how Marcia went through intense physical pain, acknowledged her dependency on others and dealt with the mood swings so common with heart disease.
The program details how her husband, family and friends helped her through this life-altering time. It shows how the once energetic author, and how-to host went from the acceptance of the inevitable to the determination "to take the negatives and make something positive out of the experience."
Marcia decided to share her experience. She felt the obligation to inform others about heart disease being the number one killer of women. She thought people should know that heart disease kills four times as many women as breast cancer and that there is a great need for organ donations. She was not "going quietly into that good night." That's just not Marcia.
As she waits for a heart transplant, Marcia uses all her energy to publish a book about her experience. The book – Heart to Heart – includes information about heart disease as well as some of Marcia's favorite recipes. She is vigilant about her obligation to work with the public to inform them of what Marcia calls an "insidious, equal-opportunity" killer.
